Let's talk seriously for a second. If you are not using hashtags on Instagram you are a fool. You might think they are pointless or a waste of time. You are wrong. Dead wrong.
Hashtags can be thought of as little miracle search tools. Not only can they bring people to you, they can help you find people. If your Instagram has stalled out and isn't seeing growth it is time to re-think your hashtag situation.
Hashtags can be used to search for people, interests, products, locations, humor, etc. The uses are endless and limitless. Don't limit yourself by refusing to use them. Use them all! Instagram allows you up to 30 hashtags.
Hopefully you've embraced actually using hashtags. Now you have to determine the right ones for you. You need to be specific about what you want to accomplish from your hashtags. If you are looking to drive interest to you, then you need to research what hashtags your target market is using. Then use them yourself. Win-win all around.
You also want to make sure that you are using hashtags that are specific to your industry. If I made cupcakes all my posts would definitely include #cupcakes. If I sold jewelry my post would have #jewelry. Hopefully you get the point here.
You need to also save a few of those amazing hashtags to be specific to the photo. If that same photo of a cupcake, was specifically a chocolate cupcake, then I would never leave out the hashtag #chocolate or #chocolatecupcakes.
You can even be specific to the area you live in, #phoenixcupcakes. Get creative and do your research. You want hashtags that are popular, but not too popular.
A hashtag with a million plus posts on it, will most likely not help you. You're amazing photos will get lost in the shuffle. Do not get lost in the shuffle.
As an added bonus, I've created a hashtag cheat sheet just for you. This will get you started to creating hashtags that will work for you. Download the Hashtag Cheat Sheet below!
