“I just don’t get it”

Sound familiar? Many entrepreneurs I’ve spoken to online and in person have told me they just don’t get Snapchat, they don’t understand how it will help their business, or they aren’t really sure what to do with it.

I’m here to give you a quick rundown on why Snapchat is useful for your business and if you agree with it (because it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea), I’ll then give you some ideas as to how you can start using this social media in your business.

Why use Snapchat for my business?

Attract more of the people you will work with best. When using Snapchat, people will get a better sense of your personality, habits, and work ethic. We have all heard it’s important to not only attract people on social media, but also to repel because we want loyal fans not just followers. Snapchat is excellent for this because people don’t want to fill up their story feed with stuff they don’t want to watch. If they’re watching you everyday, you can bet they’re a pretty loyal fan (either that or they’re family/friends). This is especially helpful to those in the service-based business because your client has a really good idea of who they’re going to be working with before you even meet in person.

Helps people see your why. We’re mostly familiar with the notion that people buy why you do what you do more than they buy what you do. Sometimes it can be hard to explain or show our why on social media. Snapchat is a good way to communicate what’s important to us, what we believe in, and why we get up in the morning. When we let people “follow” us all the time we don’t even need to explain these things, they become pretty clear to the viewers.

Let's people see who we are, really. Authenticity is something I strive for. Snapchat is, in my opinion, the best social media to communicate who I really am, not who I put on Instagram/Facebook/blog posts etc. I always aim to be more authentic on those other platforms, but they have to match branding and look good. There’s very little room for being personal. Snapchat is informal, it’s a real glimpse into my life, it’s quick and to the point, and it’s not rehearsed. It’s the best place to blend personal and professional life. When people get to know you like they know their friend, they’re more confident to buy from you. It comes back to the know, like, and trust factor. Snapchat let’s us break the impersonal barriers and build rapport with our audience.

How to use Snapchat for my business?

  • Behind the scenes/show your process. This helps followers become invested in your brand, helps people see your passion & hard work.

  • Teasers of things upcoming - products, events, services...builds investment, involvement & excitement.

  • Demos of product

  • Involve your followers by getting them to vote on things.

  • Give tips or show expertise in your area

  • Hold FAQ sessions

  • Customer Service - a way for people to contact you “in person” about your business and a way for you to give a personalized customer service experience

  • Feature others - whether it be other businesses, clients, or locations. People love a good shout out! Also, gives people an extra reason to “stay tuned” if they know they’re in your story that day.

  • Tell stories - short ones! I once shared a story about a delivery package and it got talked about for much longer than the 24hrs it was on Snapchat

  • Share specials! Deals for your loyal snapchatters. There’s a stat out right now about college-aged people being more likely to use a coupon if they saw it on Snapchat. Also, it gives a sense of urgency due to the 24hr time limit.

  • Give someone else your phone/control of your snapchat while you work or play. This gives a different point of view. Excellent for photographers.

  • Business or life routines

  • Share what inspires you (quotes/images/people/books…)

I hope this helped you get a better idea of how Snapchat can be used in business and how it can be beneficial. There’s always room to play with Snapchat so go ahead and experiment with it!
